Our Story

About Mallory

Mallory grew up in Lansing, Michigan and spent her college years in Kalamazoo, where she met Ryan. She studied English/Creative Writing and Women's Studies and then obtained a Master of Social Work degree from WMU. Before moving to Korea to teach English, she worked for several domestic violence and child welfare agencies in Michigan and Chicago. Though a social worker at heart, she loves her current job teaching English Conversation at a private high school across the street from Ryan's elementary school. In her spare time, Mallory likes to study a variety of topics including the Korean language, herbal medicine, nutrition, and photography. She loves thrift shopping, reading and writing, good country music, watching Korean dramas (soap operas), and food - cooking it, but especially eating it. Lately, she is trying to improve her photography and writing skills and continues to post sporadically on her blog, A Country Incident. Like Ryan, Mallory is passionate about traveling and learning more about herself and the world and her interests are constantly changing. She loves to hike (despite the fact that she can never keep up with Ryan on the trail) and will always prefer the beautiful outdoors to big cities. She is really excited for her family to meet Ryan's, especially our moms! Why haven't you met before, Moms??

About Ryan

A Michigan man at the core, Ryan split time growing up in White Lake and Highland. To this day White Lake-ian expressions like "barn burner," "that dog'll hunt," and goin' "muddin" charm and bemuse his city slicker better half. In the first of many moves, Ryan left the East side in favor of WMU where he also studied English/Creative Writing and Women's Studies and met Mallory. After stints booking/promoting concerts, graphic designing, and a touch of project management, Ryan has finally landed in a profession he loves, teaching English. When not wrangling gremlins and slapping tiny hands away from his bald head and beard, Ryan spends the majority of his time playing, watching, and writing about soccer. Delighted to be playing for his second international team in Korea, he also attends as many Jeonnam Dragons games as possible, created and writes for K-League United, and holds onto the eternal (and utterly foolish) hope that the Chicago Fire will one day return to glory. He also enjoys a good barley pop, and regularly homebrews to supplement the flow of beer-flavored water available in Korea. Obsessed with lists and self improvement, he's currently working on his 32 Before 32 list which will see him travel a bit, learn a bit, hike a lot, and finally get hitched!

Our History

It's not widely known that although Ryan and Mallory both attended Western Michigan University (WMU) in Kalamazoo, we actually "met" on Facebook during our sophomore year. One night, after a graveyard custodial shift on campus, Ryan sent Mallory a message. At the time, this was not considered creepy.

November 2004 - January 2005
We chat back and forth about finals, Donovan Frankenreiter, and how we both love cats. We exchange phone numbers, then discuss but fail to follow through on plans to get coffee or go ice skating. Mallory takes a trip to Canada and Ryan goes snowmobiling. Messages are exchanged but still no meeting set. Mallory’s birthday comes and she has one request: that Ryan visit her at work, a coffee shop inside the 24-hour campus video store.

January 14, 2005
Ryan visits Mallory at work. He wears a matching Ben Harper bag and beanie and rents three movies, taking advantage of the daily special: three non-new release DVDs for $5.

January 2005 - December 2007
Hangouts ensue, mostly watching movies late at night in Ryan’s studio apartment. Mallory asks Ryan out, but they decide to stay just friends. Mallory goes to Ireland for a month to study and checks her email every day for silly, flirtatious updates from Ryan. Mallory becomes the Program Director at WIDR fm, WMU's student-run radio station and hires Ryan as a DJ. Concerned about showing favoritism, she gives him the shittiest time slot available: once a week from 4-7AM. He inaugurates his first speciality show, "Jammin' in your Jammies." Eventually, he moves into a prime listening spot and creates a new show, Some Kind of Jam. Some time later, Ryan starts his own music booking and production company.

Ryan and Mallory get in and out of relationships, supporting each other through breakups and bad decisions. We spend a few years working various jobs, Ryan at a local magazine and book shop, Mallory waiting tables at various restaurants around Kalamazoo, then moving into social services. Even though we have the same double majors (English and Women's Studies), we never manage to enroll and stay in a class together. Meanwhile, Mallory's friend and roommate Karen plays matchmaker behind the scenes, sending Ryan hints that he should ask Mallory out.

In December, Ryan cuts his hair short and considers moving to Chicago to get into the music scene. Mallory gets accepted to grad school. Ryan has his wisdom teeth pulled and Mallory spends a weekend hanging with him and helping out.

December 19, 2007
Ryan realizes he wants to be with Mallory and asks her to be his date for NYE.

New Year’s Eve 2007
Ryan surprises Mallory when he introduces her as his girlfriend to friends. Mallory is surprised but thrilled, and goes along with the title.

April 2008
Ryan's apartment floods and he moves in with Mallory three months after we start dating. It's quick, but not so quick considering all the back story.

August 2008 - July 2010
Mallory almost doesn’t survive grad school, with full-time classes, a full-time job, and an internship. Ryan works at a local health food store while running his music promotions company and patiently waits, so we can take our first adventure together!

July 2010 - August 2011
A week after graduation, Ryan and Mallory pack up an unacceptable amount of junk and move to Chicago, staying with Mallory’s gracious brother for several months. Ryan starts working at Groupon and Mallory eventually lands a job in child welfare. We are very broke. The highlight of our week is the $3 jibarritos at the local Puerto Rican restaurant in Logan Square. Things get easier financially, but we both start to feel that something is missing.

August 31, 2011
Ryan asks Mallory to marry him on his 27th birthday. It is sweet and spontaneous. We celebrate with cheeseburgers and start to plan a wedding. Wedding planning becomes overwhelming and we realize it’s not what we want. Instead, we decide to take the money we were willing to spend on a wedding and move abroad.

January 2013
Ryan and Mallory move to Geoje Island in South Korea and teach English at an after-school academy. We have a great time, take some amazing trips, lose a bunch of weight, and get healthy and happy. Then, we get really homesick, miss our friends and family, and decide to come home.

January 2014
Ryan and Mallory move back to Chicago. Ryan starts working at Groupon again and Mallory gets a job at Lutheran Social Services. Mallory loves her job, but we both soon realize it was a mistake. We miss expat life and traveling the world.

March 2015
Ryan and Mallory move back to South Korea, this time accepting positions at a private elementary and high school, respectively, in Gwangyang.

May 2016
We're finally tying the knot!

We're making this official for a number of reasons. First, we essentially feel married already and it's absolutely time! Given our desire to travel the world and live abroad long-term, married status will help us do that more easily and safely. We also relish the opportunity to bring together our friends and family, many of whom have never met after all of these years! We appreciate the patience of our loved ones, who have repeatedly expressed excitement as we've waxed and waned about wedding plans.

We're also thrilled that we waited, because we are taking part in what is now an inclusive institution in the USA! Years ago, we made a vow to wait to wed until marriage equality became a reality. We are so happy to be fulfilling that commitment and sharing this joyful experience with millions of people who were previously denied the right.
